5 reasons why you should visit Mexico

Everybody has their own reasons of why and to where they choose to travel. Some visit a country only for the party life while other seek something more adventurous like a jungle trek. For whatever reason, come to Mexico, this country has it all!

People are coming to Mexico for many reasons and beautiful beaches are surely one of them so I don’t need to mention the Mexican beaches on my list do I? Beside paradise beaches in Mexico, here are my five reasons of why you should visit Mexico!

The Mexican culture and history

The reason for why you should visit Mexico is the fascinating and rich Mexican culture and history! Did you know for an example that in Mexico, other than Spanish, there are more than 50 indigenous languages. The people are so proud of their traditions and customs of their ancestors which include the ancient civilizations of the Aztecs, Maya, Inca and other more. Wherever you go in Mexico, you will see people are proudly wearing beautiful and colorful traditional clothing.

Mexico has more than 43, 000 archaeological sites and some of them are the two Mayan cities in the Yucatan Peninsula at Tulum and Chichen Itza. If you are not a history buff, don’t worry, you won’t regretting coming to the beautiful ancien Mayan city in Tulum because it has the most stunning setting of all Mexico’s archeological sites, right by the beach.

If you can’t make all the way to the ruins, head at least to the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico city. I am not myself being very into museums, but Museum of Anthropology is one of the best I have ever been to! For more information click Here.

The colorful Mexican cities

The reason why you should visit Mexico are all those bright colors you will be surrounded by everywhere in Mexico – the colorful Mexican flag, the colorful food, colorful clothes..and the very colorful Mexican cities. Living in Switzerland where food, clothes and the houses are in the same shades of grey, I found it very joyful getting lost by purpose in the colorful Mexican cities.

The Mexican food

Mexican food is so much more than tacos although this is what Mexicans are eating most of the time and wherever you go, there are stands where they sells tacos with all kind of mouth-watering fillings. And if you like to eat, then you will not need a lot of convincing that Mexican cuisine is a very good and delicious reason to visit Mexico!

When in Mexico, I have never seen hard-shelled tacos! While the real Mexican tacos are palm-size soft corn bread, the tacos in the U.S are wheat flour hard-shelled tacos.

And did you know that Fajita, BurritoNachos and not even Chili con carne are authentic Mexican. They are something the Americans invented. Burritos is actually a copy of Tacos de harina( wheat flour tacos)! And nachos suppose to be the traditional Mexican dish, Chilaquiles.

The Mexican wild life

To be honest, I don’t plan my trips based on wild animals and plants. But in Mexico, the exotic wild animals are everywhere and it is hard not to take a notice of these beautiful wild creatures. Mexican wildlife is incredibly diverse and has some truly unique species and if you are a nature-lover, come to Mexico and you will not be disappointed. If you are not, come anyway and you might find a new hobby like bird-watching and you will understand why the Mexican wild life is one of the reason anyone should come to Mexico!

The cenotes

Mexico is known to have the world’s most unusual and mystical sinkholes and underwater caves that are called cenotes. The cenotes were formed by the collapse of surface limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Since ancient times, Cenotes are sacred sites where the ancient Mayan could communicate with the gods of the underworld. Imagine, there are about over 6000 cenotes in Yucatán alone!

In my opinion, the cenotes alone are good reasons of why you should visit Mexico!

Most of the cenotes have fresh water that has been filtered by the earth, making them crystal clear therefore the visibility is amazing! At some cenotes snorkeling is a lot of fun but for those who are more adventurous you should really come to Mexico for a lifetime thrilling scuba-experience! These cenotes have the world’s largest underground river system and while swimming in the dark with a torch lightning up your way, you will see beautiful stalactites and stalagmites.

The Mexican wonderful natural sites

The Mexican natural sites should really make you want to come to Mexico! Get out of the touristic crowds by the beach and head to some of the Mexican natural wonders! I haven’t been to all of them so I am surely going back to Mexico to discover some more! Here are some of the wonderful natural sites in Mexico.

Laguna Bacalar

This lagoon also called as The lagoon of seven colours because of the white sandy bottom that gives the effect of having so many shades of blue. Laguna Bacalar looks like to be the sea but is actually a fresh water lake, feed by underground cenotes! The lake lays only about 200km from Tulum and yet not much tourist get it to this stunning Laguna Bacalar, don’t be one of them!

Las Coloradas

Although only about 3h drives from Playa del Carmen, we never got all the way to this pink lake Las Coloradas, I belive it should be on the list as one of Mexican’s wonderful natural sites! But the Las Coloradas is actually a man-made salt production. The joyful pink colour comes from red-colored algae, plankton, and brine shrimp that thrive in the salty environment and once the water evaporate the pink colour get more concentrated.

The Cascadas Agua azul in spanish means the bleu waterfalls, which are not just by looking at my photos, but don’t let them deceive you because if you come here on the right time at the right moment these magnificent waterfalls turn incredible blue! Only about 70km away from Palenque, you should not miss this Mexican’s wonderful natural site!

Laguna Miramar

Not many tourist know about Laguna Mirama, a beautiful fresh water lake, well-hidden in the Mexican jungle on the border with Guatemala. Far far away from the civilisation, Laguna Miramar is not easy to reach but once you get there…you just don’t want to leave! Read about our days by the Laguna Miramar Here.

Monarch migration

Standing in the middle of a field surrounded by thousands of fluttering butterflies should be a reason of why you should come to Mexico! Millions of Monarch butterfliesmigrate to the mountains of Mexico annually, years after years. These butterflies spend their summer month in the native fields and forests of central and northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. By the end of summer they fly about 5000km to spend the winter in the warmer central Mexico’s majestic Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains.

Sumidero Canyon

This beautiful Sumidero canyon is surrounded by the Sumidero Canyon NationalPark and they are the second most important tourist site in the state Chiapas. The Sumidero Canyon was formed by cracks in the earth’s crust along with erosion by the Grijalva river, which still flows through it.The process of its formation began about 35 million years ago, making the Sumidero contemporary with the Grand Canyon on the Colorado river.

You have to take a boat tour to be able to enter the canyon. There are beautiful waterfalls and wild animals along the way so the boat ride never gets boring.

So what do you guys think about Mexico? Another stunning country to add to your bucket-list?

These are more than enough reasons for visiting Mexico. The big attraction for me, though was the food. Never realised that Mexican cuisine is so varied.

  2. Your cover picture says it all. Mexico is so amazing. I am intrigued by the food, culture and beautiful history of the place. Cheers!!

  3. I’d have to agree with all the reasons (except maybe wildlife because I am not much into that). I’d love to visit Mexico for the food, the archaeological sites, the nature (gorgeous beaches!), I especially want to visit Tulum and Cancun because I have heard so much about these cities. Mayan Ruins are in my bucket list, hopefully I will make it in 2019.

you have given all the reasons to visit Mexico. I would purely visit Mexico for its people and its culture. I am fascinated by the cultural magnetism of Mexico. Apart from that the food and also cenotes are super inviting and have convinced me to pay a visit soon.
